MYOPIA CONTROL
WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a common vision problem characterized by the ability to see well up close, while distant objects are blurred.  This blurring occurs because the eyeball continually lengthens beyond what is normal.  In the United States, myopia is a growing problem among children and teens.  Around a third of all teens are myopic, including 90% of the Asian population.

The Importance of Controlling Myopia

Myopia that develops in childhood nearly always stabilizes by age 20, but by then, some kids have a high degree of nearsightedness that makes them more vulnerable to serious health issues.  A high prescription increases your risk of developing eye diseases that could lead to loss of vision, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.  Myopia control is integral to children’s future eye and vision health as it slows down the progression of myopia and prevents a high prescription.

MYOPIA CONTROL AND ORTHO-K

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is the use of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses to flatten the shape of the cornea and thereby reduce or correct mild to moderate amounts of nearsightedness. The lenses are worn overnight and removed in the morning. Many people with low to moderate amounts of myopia can see well without glasses or contact lenses during the day after wearing the corneal reshaping lenses at night. Recent research suggests Ortho-K also reduces the lengthening of the eye itself, which means that wearing Ortho-K lenses during childhood may actually cause a permanent reduction in myopia and protect your eyes from sight-threatening diseases in the future.

OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS
FOR MYOPIA CONTROL

At Golden Vision, we provide personalized myopia control programs.  We will work with you and your child to keep their prescription low and reduce their risk for eye diseases.  Our most effective treatment is Ortho-K, but we often use this method in combination with other myopia control techniques, such as atropine drops and Myopia Education.

Topical atropine is a medicine used to dilate the pupil and relax the eyes’ focusing mechanism. Research has suggested nearsightedness in children may be linked to focusing fatigue, so using atropine to disable the eye’s focusing mechanism helps to control myopia.

Myopia Education is the use of natural eye relaxation techniques and proper eye hygiene to prevent the progression of myopia.  We teach children how to care for their eyes on a daily basis when doing normal activities, such as using technology, ensuring outdoor activity, and practicing safe reading habits.

WHAT ABOUT LASIK SURGERY AS AN ALTERNATIVE

LASIK surgery is an alternative for vision correction for people over the age of 18, but it is not a myopia control method.  LASIK will not reduce or slow down the progression of myopia, so your risk for eye diseases will remain the same with or without LASIK surgery.  Myopia control is mainly effective for children and teens, because those are the ages when your prescription increases the most.
