ORTHO-K WHAT IS IT AND WHO IS IT FOR?
ORTHO-K WHAT IS IT AND WHO IS IT FOR?
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is the process of reshaping the eye with specially designed rigid gas permeable (GP) contact lenses. The GP lenses for Ortho-K are applied at bedtime and worn overnight. While you sleep, the lenses gently reshape the cornea, or front surface of your eye, to correct your vision, so you can see clearly without glasses or contact lenses when you’re awake. The effect is temporary – generally enough to get you through a day or two – so you must wear the reshaping lenses each night to maintain good vision during the day. While Ortho-K can alleviate the need to wear glasses or contacts during the day, its primary purpose is to control myopia in children and teens.
HOW DOES ORTHO-K
CONTROL MYOPIA IN CHILDREN?
Ortho-K is a common technique to control the progression of myopia, also known as nearsightedness, in children and teens. A high degree of myopia can lead to an increased risk for eye diseases such as retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Ortho-K lenses can slow down or stop the progression of myopia in children by 50-60% to ensure a lower prescription. Houston Golden Vision has a special custom designed Ortho-K lens that is even more effective and can slow down myopia by up to 90%.

Myopia is one of the most common vision problems in the United States. We recommend children have a yearly eye exam to not only check the health of their eyes but also to examine whether their eyes are being affected by myopia. Alongside Ortho-K, Golden Vision can offer a combination of myopia control methods to create a personalized program for your child. To learn more about these myopia control programs, click here.
GOLDEN VISION’S APPROACH TO ORTHO-K
The industry standard Ortho-K lens is FDA-approved and known as Corneal Refractive Therapy or CRT. These lenses correct a mild amount of astigmatism and prescriptions up to -6 diopters. Golden Vision does offer CRT for those patients who have a lower prescription and are looking for a more generally available commercial lens. However, we also offer our own custom Gold Design lenses which can correct moderate amounts of astigmatism and prescriptions over -6 diopters.
Golden Vision Ortho-K
Custom Design Gold Lenses
Our eye doctors take pride in providing Houston superior Ortho-K services with our unique Gold Design lenses. These custom lenses were developed in-house and can correct higher amounts of astigmatism as well as prescriptions up to -10 diopters. They take into account your individual eye shape, size, and curvatures.
Our Houston Ortho-K lenses are approved for over 16 hours of overnight use due to their safety, breathability, and comfort. They only take one night and about 4 hours of wear to give you optimal vision results. This is much faster than the industry standard Ortho-K lens, which can take a few days with 8 hours of wear per night before you see the results you want.
GOLDEN VISION CUSTOM
ORTHO-K LENS FITTING AND MATERIALS
We customize our Gold Design lenses to fit your unique eyes and use high oxygen permeable materials to ensure that your eyes retain moisture. This way, your eyes do not dry out overnight with prolonged use. We also offer both hard and soft lens options, so you can find the lenses that are the most comfortable for you.
TAKING CARE OF ORTHO-K LENSES
Ortho-K lenses should be cleaned every day with our hydrogen peroxide system. This kills any germs or bacteria threatening the eyes and reduces the risk of infection. We also recommend that you change out your lenses once a year. You can receive a new fitted pair from your ophthalmologist.
Coverage of Ortho-K lenses varies amongst vision insurance plans. Call one of our insurance specialists to see if your insurance coverage includes Ortho-K. Learn more about insurance coverage and financing options on our insurance and payments page.
You can give your kids the gift of clear sight. Ortho-K will not only give your children the freedom to be active during the day without the hassle of glasses or contacts, but will also shield their eyes from the progression of myopia.
